Why is Rugby Sevens held in Hong Kong? | 點解七人欖球會喺香港搞？
The Hong Kong Sevens is the "Jewel in the Crown" of global rugby. Its history is a fascinating mix of logistical necessity and a legendary party spirit that turned a fringe sport into a global phenomenon.
In 1975, the founders—Tokkie Smith and Ian Gow—wanted to host a traditional 15-a-side tournament. However, they realized it was far easier and cheaper to fly in 12 teams of 7 players than 12 teams of 15+. This "budget" decision changed sports history forever.

2. Asia's First Major Sporting "Party" (亞洲首個大型體育派對)

1976: The first tournament was held at the Hong Kong Football Club with only 12 teams and 3,000 fans.

Hong Kong is the spiritual home of the Sevens because it invented the "Sevens Lifestyle"—the South Stand costumes, the non-stop music, and the fast-paced action. It showed the world that rugby wasn't just a tough sport, but a celebration of life.
Did you know Rugby Sevens wasn't invented for fun, but to save a club from bankruptcy? In 1883, a butcher named Ned Haig in Melrose, Scotland, suggested a shortened, 7-a-side rugby tournament to raise funds for the struggling local rugby club. The faster, action-packed format was a massive hit!
你知唔知七人欖球最初係為咗「撲水」救亡？1883年，蘇格蘭 Melrose 一間欖球會面臨財政危機，當地一位肉販 Ned Haig 提議舉辦縮短版的7人賽來籌款。結果這種節奏明快、刺激的賽制大受歡迎，從此誕生了七人欖球！
2. Lightning Fast Matches (極速對決：每場只打14分鐘)
Unlike traditional 15-a-side rugby which lasts for 80 minutes, a standard Sevens match is played in two 7-minute halves, totaling just 14 minutes! The final match of a tournament used to be 20 minutes, but was recently shortened to 14 minutes as well to protect player welfare. It’s a pure, non-stop adrenaline rush.
In most sports, including 15-a-side rugby, the team that concedes a point gets to restart the game by kicking the ball. But in Sevens, the team that just scored kicks off! This prevents one team from hoarding possession and keeps the game highly unpredictable and exciting.
The year 2026 is incredibly historical as it marks the 50th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Sevens! From its humble beginnings in 1976 at the HKFC, moving to the Government Stadium, transforming into the iconic Hong Kong Stadium, and now celebrating its golden jubilee at the state-of-the-art Kai Tak Sports Park.
2026 is the second year the Sevens is hosted at the Kai Tak Sports Park. The new stadium features a retractable roof, better cooling systems, and an incredible acoustic bowl design that amplifies the roars of 50,000 fans, taking the legendary South Stand vibe to a whole new level!
If a player receives a yellow card in Sevens, they are sent to the "Sin Bin" (penalty box) for 2 minutes. While 2 minutes sounds short, in a 14-minute game, losing a player for that long almost guarantees the opposing team will score. It’s a game-changing punishment.
Like all rugby, you cannot pass the ball forward to a teammate. You must pass backwards or laterally while running forward. This rule creates the beautiful, sweeping offensive lines that make Sevens so visually satisfying to watch.
In a 15-a-side team, there are 8 forwards and 7 backs with highly specialized roles. In Sevens, there are only 3 forwards and 4 backs. Because there is so much open space on the pitch, every single player must be incredibly fast, agile, and capable of tackling and sprinting long distances.
9. The South Stand Costume Culture (南看台的Cosplay傳統)
The Hong Kong Sevens is globally famous for its South Stand (南看台). It’s an unwritten rule that if you sit there, you must wear a crazy costume! From Super Mario and dinosaurs to giant beers and superheroes, it’s a 3-day Halloween party mixed with world-class sports.
When there is a minor rule infringement (like dropping the ball forward), the game restarts with a "scrum" (鬥牛). In Sevens, the scrum consists of only 3 players from each team, compared to the massive 8-on-8 shoving matches in 15s. It gets the ball back into open play much faster!
